The Family of Dr. Joseph I. Castro Announces His Passing
With profound sadness, we share that our cherished husband and father, Joseph Isaac Castro, passed away on August 24, 2025, at the age of 58, after a courageous journey with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Mary; his sons, Isaac and Jess; his daughter, Lauren; and his daughter-in-law, Marilyn—his greatest joys in life.
First and foremost, Joe was a devoted husband, father, and man of faith. As a devout Catholic, he lived with humility, compassion, and an abiding commitment to serving others. His warmth, generosity, and conviction in the power of education to change lives touched his family most deeply and extended to students, colleagues, and communities across California and beyond.
As his family, we take comfort in knowing that Joe’s life was guided by a desire to open doors of opportunity for others. From his days as a young child in Head Start to his later years in higher education, he held fast to the belief that education could strengthen families and transform communities.
His influence continues in the many people he encouraged, supported, and inspired along the way.
We are profoundly grateful for the outpouring of love during this difficult time. Joe touched countless hearts, and we find solace in knowing his spirit will live on in the students, colleagues, friends, and loved ones who carry forward his example. Thank you for keeping our family in your prayers.
We also wish to express our heartfelt appreciation to the UC Irvine medical team, whose extraordinary compassion and professionalism brought great comfort to Joe and our family.
Joe’s final resting place will be in Santa Barbara, where services will be held with family and close friends.
